Using Affirmations To Transform Your Life

What are affirmations?

Affirmations are declarations that we make that are either positive or negative.  Affirmations are generally purposeful, planned out and meant to make a positive change in our lives, although some affirmations are impulsive, reactive to sudden changes in our environment. The more we use affirmations, the more our actions and life are aligned with them.  The basis of affirmations is much like a ripple effect.  Wind blowing against the water causes ripples.  If the wind isn’t sustained, the ripples fade away, but if the wind keeps up, the ripples can become a tsunami.

The inner workings of affirmations

The way we lead our lives is shaped by our beliefs and emotions. Americans who grew up in the Great Depression, for example, were much more frugal as adults than either the generation before or after them, because they grew up believing that prosperity could be snatched away from them.

Our beliefs are stored in our subconscious minds.  Accomplishing and maintaining your goals is very strongly linked to your subconscious belief about how deserving you are.  Believing that you don’t deserve to reach a particular goal can keep you from achieving it, which in turn can keep you from achieving happiness.  It’s on this subconscious level where we have to make the effort to change the pattern of our beliefs.

Ever heard the phrase to  “keep good company and avoid bad company”? We tend to reflect the things and people around us, so that when we keep company with highly goal-oriented people, we tend to become goal-oriented ourselves. The more our behavior changes in response to our external surroundings, the more our subconscious minds change to reflect that new reality.  It’s critical to keep the company of positive people.  If you keep company with negative people – those who are always highly critical, for example, or who routinely expect the worst of everyone – you will inevitably find yourself becoming the same way, and the core beliefs that direct the way you lead your life will also start shifting to reflect that negativity.

It’s your core beliefs, in your subconscious, that must be changed to allow you to think and live positively. Here are some tips on changing your subconscious mind to benefit using affirmations to help manifest your desired outcome.

* Always seek the best in things and people. Don’t try to couch your affirmations in negative terms. Out subconscious minds process information very simply, and negative thoughts aren’t processed well, if at all. Your subconscious mind cannot process the negative affirmation.  If you try to affirm to yourself “I am not broke,” the word “not” gets filtered out.

* Keep your affirmations in the present, not in the past or the future.  “I will find my true love” is not a good affirmation because it sets a truth for the future, not for today.  Your subconscious mind is very much like a computer – you must carefully consider what you program into it, because it’s very literal.  You’ll achieve much better results using affirmations like “I choose to be wealthy,” or “I’m the sort of person who enjoys spending time doing things to help other people.”  Think carefully about the word “choice” in your affirmations.  Choice is a powerful concept because it affirms not only the specific thing like wealth or romance, it also reinforces that you’re in control of your own life.

* Repetition is very important when using affirmations.  Frequent daily affirmations is the most effective way to make the most of this powerful tool.  Affirmations are like taking vitamins – in order to be effective, you must follow your schedule every day, not just for a couple of days.  Repeatedly using affirmations several times daily, over the long run, is the best way to get positive results.

* You can use affirmations however it’s most convenient and comfortable – you can write them down, you can speak them out loud, or you can think them. As already mentioned, repetition is critical.  Repetition out loud is especially effective, and you should try to find at least two times a day when you can do so 10 times each.  Your affirmations should be written down also.  Try to write them several times daily and especially before going to bed. When you write your affirmations, your subconscious mind is getting the message from your conscious mind as it thinks through the writing process, and also from your eyes, which are watching your affirmations as they’re written out. The “card method” described by Napoleon Hill in his book “Think and Grow Rich” is said to be an especially effective method of affirmation.  Have a picture of what you want or a written affirmation on an index card and keep it in your pocket.  Whenever you can, take a moment to read over the affirmations on the card.

* Affirmations can be reinforced by using the Mirror Technique. One of the best ways to connect with your subconscious mind is to stand in front of the mirror and look right into your eyes.  Repeat your affirmations forcefully.  Do this everyday, whenever you see your reflection, at home or out and about, make sure you say it with all the passion you have.  This technique works and is a very powerful technique to use.

When using affirmations, you can get the desired results when combining one or more of these methods.  Rome wasn’t built in a day.  The more you practice and visualize, though, the faster you can expect your results to start happening.
