How do YOU create and develop your characters?

Are there some methods or step by step procedures that you take in order to create your characters? Or do they come to your naturally? Do you base your characters off of real people in real life? Where do you get the motivations to create your characters?

When you finally create a character, do you try to channel yourself in their shoes? If so, how do you do it? If not, then how do you develop and make your characters come to life?

Sorry for bombarding you with so many questions. All answers will be much appreciated. Thank-you.

No real process. Idea seeds come naturally and then I flesh them out a little on a sheet of paper. I don’t base characters on people I know, though I do like to go to malls and airports and take notes on how people walk, talk, dress, etc. and I use those (so I guess I do base them on people, just not ones I know).

I don’t try to put myself in their shoes, per se, because I don’t want to taint their actions with my thoughts. I do try to become a passenger in their mind though, seeing and experiencing things through their eyes but without influencing or judging it. Just observing while they do their things.

In other words, I try to let them tell their story through me instead of driving and deciding on what I want their story to be from my point of view.
