Ladies Tights – Changing Fashions

Posted on Friday, June 12, 2009 in General Fashion News

One fashion item never to go out of fashion are ladies tights. Fashions change but we will always wear tights (or pantyhose as they’re known in the US) in some form or the other. Following the invention of nylon in the 1930′s “nylons” became universally popular in the 1960′s and since then women have relied on them for comfortable, affordable every day use.

Nylon beacme a cheaper alternative to silk but nowadays tights and stockings are made from many more affordable and comfortable alternatives as well. The addition of Lycra helps to stop tights going baggy and getting wrinkles at the ankles, which was a problem for ladies during the 1950′s! We’ve even taken things one step further and now wear shaping hosiery, there are whole ranges of body shaping tights available to tone and shape all our wobbly bits, like bums, tums and legs.

A popular, classic material for making winter tights to keep you warm and toasty is wool, as it’s soft, comfortable and available in lots of colours. Wool tights are the perfect way to look contemporary but stay warm during the colder months and there is such a vast array of colours available now that you can wear a different pair every day of the week.

When the weather warms up a little but you still like to keep your legs covered good, old-fashioned opaque tights always do the trick. Opauqe tights have come a long way since the days of sheer nylons, and have become a necessity for many women. They come in all sorts of colours and many different deniers.

The thickness of the tights is measured by the denier, this is actually the thickness of the weave and the higher the denier the thicker the tights are. Opaque tights are generally 40 denier or above, while sheer tights range from 5 denier to 30 denier usually, but often have re-inforced toes and tops.

Sheer tights are also made from lots of different materials as the denier is ascertained by the thickness of the weave and does not differ depending on the material they’re made from.

Whichever tights you prefer – opaque, sheer, support, coloured, wet look, footless, or suspender – there is a vast array of choice available to buy now.

If you feel that tights aren’t very sexy you can always wear their alternative, hold ups or stockings. Hold ups and stockings are often worn by women for special occasions instead of tights as they do the same job but feel so much sexier. Like ladies tights, stockings and hold ups are now made in a vast range of colours, different materials and deniers so you should be able to buy something suitable for every outfit.

Ladies tights are an essential item for most women and look set to remain that way even while fashions changes around them and technology advances!
