Are Men Starting To Care More About Their Appearance?

Posted on Monday, November 30, 2009 in Attraction

Yes it’s a stereotype but isn’t it supposed to be women who like to spend hours on their appearance? Beauty products, face masks, spa treatments and waxing are all things we usually see as being girly. But a new trend is emerging for men who like to indulge themselves in these luxuries and spend as much time on their beauty routines as any woman.

I know what you’re thinking and no, it’s not just those modern ‘metrosexual’ men with fancy haircuts, fashionable clothes and regular visits to the health spa that are beginning to experiment with their beauty routines. More and more men from all different areas of society are spending more time on their appearance than just having a quick shave in the mornings.

A lot of this is because of the internet, and the way products are now readily available to any man without having to walk up to a beauty counter in a shop. Many men are very aware of the stigma attached to too much grooming and feel like their masculinity might be challenged if people knew they were using skincare products. Sites like www.mankind.co.uk sell a huge range of different male grooming products from moisturisers to fragrances to anti-aging creams and make it easy for men to get these things delivered to their door, without anyone else ever needing to know.

The number of different male grooming products available is growing all the time, from basic shaving products and moisturiser to face masks or even makeup intended specifically for men. Brands like Anthony Logistics and Zirh have put years of research into men’s skincare, hand care and a shaving routine from either includes not only shaving creams but also all sorts of pre-shave oils and post-shave ‘healers’. For skin the Biotherm Homme range has a seemingly endless supply of different creams and lotions for every specific need, from anti-aging eye cream to energising or anti-dullness moisturisers.

So as for that stereotype about pampering being a women’s thing – it’s time to move over ladies because men are embracing their desire to look good and discovering the benefits of looking after their bodies.

While Richard (Clive Swift) works on the electrics, he bumps into the Vicar (Jeremy Gittins) who is hiding from Hyacinth as she waits for the aristocratic Mrs. Drummond (Sue Lloyd) to arrive. Hyacinth’s father (George Webb), in uniform with rifle and bugle, thinks he is on military duty again. Onslow (Geoffrey Hughes), Daisy (Judy Cornwell), and Rose (Mary Millar) stop by the church hall to ask the vicar to exorcise him. ~ Michelle Troutman, Rovi Keeping Up Appearances: Beacon For the Best in Hospitality No synopsis available. Keeping Up Appearances: Indoor/Outdoor Luxury Barbeque and Finger Buffet No synopsis available. Keeping Up Appearances: Please Mind Your Head Hyacinth (Patricia Routledge) feels at home in her new country retreat, an “old world bijou” mansion apartment, however, the low ceilings and cramped rooms make Richard (Clive Swift) claustrophic. Emmet (David Griffin) and Elizabeth (Josephine Tewson) rejoice over Hyacinth’s weekend away, until Elizabeth relents to her invitation to tea. Always striving to make a proper impression, despite her lack of experience, Hyacinth accepts Emmet’s suggestion they go horseback riding. Afterward, more guests arrive, but Hyacinth and Richard can’t quite help them feel comfortable in close quarters. ~ Michelle Troutman, Rovi Keeping Up Appearances: Hyacinth Tees Off Hyacinth (Patricia Routledge) plans to get Richard (Clive Swift) an executive position at the frozen foods company Frosticles through her idea of networking and going golfing to meet Frosticles exec Mr. Millburn (Frederick Jaeger). To make up for her mistake, Hyacinth offers to escort him back to the station, ignoring the warnings of the chairwoman (Geraldine Newman) about his randiness. ~ Miche

He dreads the ordeal so much he begs his boss (Ivor Danvers) to let him keep working. At the Bucket residence, Hyacinth invites Elizabeth (Josephine Tewson) over for coffee and boasts about her candlelight supper guest Mrs. Henderson, one of “the Hendersons” — “the frozen food people,” whom she hopes could give Richard an executive position. This time Hyacinth decides they will look at Iron Age remains, and it’s Richard’s (Clive Swift) job to climb a tree to spot them. Later, Hyacinth calls Elizabeth (Josephine Tewson) over for tea to ask her if she has noticed anything odd about Richard’s sarcastic behavior, but Richard isn’t the only one acting strange. Hyacinth’s sister Rose (Mary Millar) gives up on life in typical dramatic fashion after her boyfriend returns to his wife. Hyacinth tries to talk Rose into coming out of her room before the vicar (Jeremy Gittins) she finds attractive arrives to give her “spiritual counseling.” ~ Michelle Troutman, Rovi Keeping Up Appearances: How to Go on Holiday Without Really Trying One of Hyacinth’s neighbors calls to tell her about her month-long Caribbean vacation, and not to be outdone, Hyacinth (Patricia Routledge) demands she and Richard (Clive Swift) get brochures at the local travel agency to show everyone she is planning a trip to an exclusive location.
